Liquid crystalline samples are uniquely rich in
information on the structure, conformation and
orientational order of the molecules. There are
applications to pure liquid crystals, to dissolved
molecules, and to biological macromolecules, and the
interests of the scientific community which engages in
this area of research are not usually well represented
at the many, large conferences on the applications of
NMR in general, on biological applications, or on liquid
crystals. Marcello Longeri of the University of
Calabria, Carlo Alberto Veracini of the University of
Pisa and Jim Emsley of the University of Southampton
sought to remedy this neglect by bringing together those
interested in the different applications of this subject
to a Monastery of Frati Minori in Tropea, Calabria in
2005. The result was a very stimulating occasion, with
32 attendees from such far-flung places as Canada,
Armenia, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland, Finland, France,
Slovenia, England, and several parts of Italy. All
departed having made new friends, and hoping that this
conference will become a regular chance to discuss
common problems in the application of this fascinating
aspect of NMR spectroscopy. Well, this second edition,
with an enlarged number of participants, is the proof
that sometimes hopes are fulfilled... |
