Title: Platform-chemicals synthesis through selective hydrogenation of chemical intermediates from renewables

Abstract:
Catalytic conversion of renewables is an important topic today. This is linked to the necessity of replacing fossil resources with renewables ones. In this perspective, 5-hydroxymethyl-2- furaldehyde (HMF) is a fundamental molecule because it could be obtained from renewables resources and through its hydrogenation it is possible to obtain important monomers, such as 2,5- bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTF), and bio- fuel, such as 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF). The goal of this project is to optimize the synthesis of these compounds, in respect of Green Chemistry principles, working with heterogeneous catalysts and water as solvent. Furthermore, we’ll investigate two different hydrogenating agents: hydrogen and formic acid, a byproduct of HMF synthesis. Once optimized the synthesis of these compounds, starting from HMF, we’ll study the possibility of using monosaccharides and polysaccharides aqueous solution, obtained from hydrolysis of biomass, as starting materials and the one-pot conversion of biomass. At the end of reactions we’ll study the recyclability of catalysts and their reactivation.
